Burlingame High’s varsity flag football team beat Mills 14–6 at home Wednesday, Oct. 7, improving to 5–4, according to the school’s athletics listing.

The Panthers lost 20-7 at Menlo-Atherton on Monday, Oct. 5, falling to 4-4 overall before the Mills win.

The defeat was the Panthers’ second to the Bears this season. Menlo-Atherton beat Burlingame 19-6 in the season opener on Sept. 9 at Burlingame. The Bears improved to 8-3 with the Oct. 5 win, according to MaxPreps.

The offense struggled against Menlo-Atherton. Burlingame managed just one score after averaging more than 20 points per game across its four wins through Sept. 28.

After the opening loss to Menlo-Atherton, Burlingame won two straight: 18-13 at Mills on Sept. 14 and 32-6 over Woodside on Sept. 16. A 27-0 loss to Carlmont on Sept. 21 interrupted the run, but the Panthers bounced back with wins over Aragon (26-19 on Sept. 23) and Hillsdale (18-0 on Sept. 28). Burlingame then lost back-to-back games to San Mateo (26-22 on Sept. 30) and Menlo-Atherton before beating Mills.

Head coach Isabel Hernandez spoke about her approach after the Sept. 16 blowout of Woodside, when the team was 2-1.

“Just trying to keep perfecting what we have going,” Hernandez told The Burlingame B at the time. “I don’t want to introduce anything crazy because I feel like my biggest thing for them right now is confidence as a group.”

The BHS Athletics schedule shows five regular-season games scheduled after Oct. 7.

Road games at Woodside on Oct. 12 at 6 p.m. and at Carlmont on Oct. 14 precede a home matchup with Aragon on Oct. 19, a trip to Hillsdale on Oct. 21 and a regular-season finale at home against San Mateo on Oct. 26.
