Jesse Lehane, a former assistant under longtime head coach Shawn Scott, has been named Burlingame High School's new varsity baseball coach, the school announced Wednesday, Aug. 19.
Lehane inherits a program coming off a PAL Bay Division title and a CCS Division II semifinal run, but facing significant roster turnover after losing 12 seniors from the 2026 squad.
Scott coached 16 years. His final game was a May 27 CCS semifinal loss to Palma High School, 8-3. That season, Burlingame finished 11-3 in league play and beat Leigh High School 2-0 in the CCS quarterfinals before falling to Palma.
The hire answers a question that had faced the program since Scott's departure. Junior second baseman Charlie Cheng told The Burlingame B on June 1, after the Panthers' CCS semifinal loss, that the transition would reshape the team's identity.
"I think it's just gonna be very different next year, not only with Shawn leaving but the amount of seniors that are leaving as well," Cheng said. "It's gonna look totally different next year, and so I think [we'll be] building team chemistry within the new guys that come up, as well as figuring out our team identity ... being able to build chemistry with a new team next year will be pretty important."
Cheng and junior pitcher Nash Trautwein are among the returning players expected to anchor the roster under Lehane when the 2027 season opens. Lehane's promotion from within Scott's staff signals continuity for a program that won its division in Scott's final campaign.
The 2027 season schedule has not yet been released. Cheng and Trautwein will look to defend the Bay Division title under their new coach.
