Three Foster City residents clung to their overturned sailboat in San Francisco Bay on July 12, until San Mateo County Sheriff's deputies pulled them from the water near Coyote Point.
The Sheriff's Office Marine Unit was already on the bay conducting a training exercise near the San Mateo-Hayward Bridge when deputies received reports of a capsized sailboat near Coyote Point at approximately 1:30 p.m., according to the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office.
Two Marine Unit boats responded. When deputies arrived, they found all three passengers in the water, holding onto the hull of the overturned vessel.
Deputies pulled the three from the bay. The passengers appeared uninjured but were shaking from exposure to the cold water, the sheriff's office said.
The rescued boaters were transported to Coyote Point Marina, where San Mateo Consolidated Fire Department personnel evaluated them and cleared them to leave. Deputies also recovered the sailboat and towed it to the marina.
Sheriff Ken Binder praised the unit's response in a statement, crediting deputies' training and experience for the quick rescue of three community members from the bay.
The rescue occurred in waters near Coyote Point Marina, a county-operated facility in San Mateo popular with local sailors. The marina hosts weekly sailboat races through the Coyote Point Yacht Club, and afternoon winds in the area can reach 15 to 20 knots during spring and summer, according to San Mateo County Parks.
The sheriff's office did not release the names of the three rescued individuals or the type of sailboat involved. The cause of the capsizing was not reported. No injuries were reported.
