A free forum on 19 ballot measures ahead of the Nov. 3 election has already sold out in Burlingame.
The League of Women Voters of Northern and Central San Mateo County will present "Know Your Ballot: A Nonpartisan Measures Breakdown" on Monday, Sept. 28, from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Burlingame Woman's Club, 241 Park Road. The event's registration page showed registration as sold out as of Thursday, Sept. 17, a day before the Friday, Sept. 18, RSVP deadline.
The one-hour session will cover all 14 statewide propositions on the California ballot, four San Mateo County measures and one Bay Area measure. The League said it plans to present balanced arguments for and against each item in its nonpartisan format.
What's on the ballot
November's ballot is packed. Among the 14 state propositions, Proposition 40 would levy a 5 percent tax on the personal wealth of California billionaires, according to the Mercury News. Proposition 3 would make a high-income surtax permanent. Proposition 43 would reinstate a two-thirds vote requirement for certain local special taxes.
Closer to home, one of the four county measures is a charter amendment to create an Independent Redistricting Commission for Board of Supervisors districts. The Board of Supervisors placed it on the ballot at its June 9 meeting, according to the League's website.
The Bay Area measure, known as the Connect Bay Area Act, would impose a sales tax across five Bay Area counties, including San Mateo County, for 14 years. The measure would generate an estimated $980 million annually to fund BART, Caltrain, SamTrans and other transit agencies, according to KQED.
Burlingame voters will also see two additional local measures not covered by the forum: Measure D, a city transient occupancy tax measure, and Measure R, a Burlingame School District bond measure, according to the San Mateo County Assessor-County Clerk-Recorder's office.
How to still weigh in
Voters who missed the registration window can email questions to [email protected] with "Burlingame Woman's Club Pros & Cons" in the subject line. The League said it would consider questions submitted before the presentation.
Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 3.
