Burlingame varsity football ran its record to 5-0 with a 21-10 win over the Menlo Knights on Sunday, Sept. 27, closing out non-league play.
The Panthers traveled to Menlo School's Cartan Field for the matchup and led 15-0 late in the first half before the Knights found the scoreboard. Senior Jayden Hurrell punched in a 6-yard touchdown run with 35 seconds left in the second quarter, with Grant Weyer adding the extra point to push the lead to 15-0 at that stage. Burlingame held on for the 21-10 final, though penalties slowed the pace throughout.
The Burlingame High School Athletics account noted on X that penalties plagued the contest but confirmed the milestone 5-0 mark to close the first half of the season.
It was the eighth all-time meeting between the two programs. Menlo held a 4-3 series edge entering the game, according to a pre-game post from the BHS athletics account.
The unbeaten run has been emphatic at times. In Week 4, the No. 18-ranked Panthers routed fellow unbeaten Hillsdale 59-6 on Sept. 18, a game in which senior cornerback Dylan Black returned three interceptions for touchdowns, the Mercury News reported. Two weeks before that, Burlingame rolled past Carlmont 41-13 on Friday, Sept. 4, with senior receiver Will Armstrong hauling in two touchdown passes from quarterback Mark O'Grady, according to The Burlingame B.
Head coach John Philipopoulos has guided a roster loaded with senior talent. Quarterback Mark O'Grady, receivers Will Armstrong and Black, running back Qasim Abutair and fullback Fotu Lavulo have all made key contributions across the five-game stretch. After the Carlmont win, Philipopoulos told The Burlingame B the early results spoke to the group's ceiling, saying the team's ability to control that game for four quarters "says a lot about this group and our potential."
After that same Carlmont game, Black said he had one goal: "I'm just looking forward to staying undefeated. You know, we can't be losing, so just keeping that zero on our record."
Five games in, that zero still stands.
The Panthers open De Anza League play Friday, Oct. 9, at Earl Hansen Viking Stadium in Palo Alto. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
