Burlingame High football returns home Friday, Oct. 16, to face undefeated Half Moon Bay in the Panthers' first home league game of the season.
Kickoff is set for 6:55 p.m., according to the school’s official schedule.
The school's athletics department is encouraging fans to wear pink in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, promoting the game as a pink-out on its Instagram page.
Burlingame (5-1) was listed at No. 12 and Half Moon Bay (6-0) at No. 20 in the Bay Area News Group’s Week 7 scoreboard. Half Moon Bay beat Woodside 35-21 on Oct. 9.
The Panthers are coming off their first loss of the season, a 35-21 defeat at Palo Alto on Oct. 9. Before that, Burlingame had outscored opponents 215-29 through five games, according to its MaxPreps schedule.
Head coach John Philipopoulos is in his 25th season leading the program, according to the East Bay Times.
Burlingame’s defense powered the Panthers’ 5-0 start. Senior defensive back Dylan Black led the Central Coast Section MaxPreps interception leaderboard with six interceptions through five games, according to the published statistics.
In a 59-6 win over Hillsdale on Sept. 17, Black returned three picks for touchdowns.
“I have not. It’s got to be a record. I’ve never been a part of that nor have I ever seen it,” Philipopoulos told the East Bay Times after the Hillsdale game.
Black and fellow senior Will Armstrong anchor the secondary. Armstrong, who plays both wide receiver and cornerback, scored three touchdowns in the Hillsdale win.
Through five games, Armstrong averaged 63.4 receiving yards per game with seven receiving touchdowns, according to MaxPreps. Senior linebacker Reid O’Brien averaged 4.8 tackles per game over that span.
Half Moon Bay is the only undefeated team left on Burlingame’s schedule as of Oct. 12.
After Friday’s game, Burlingame travels to Woodside on Oct. 23 at 7 p.m., then returns home to face Mountain View on Oct. 30 at 6:55 p.m. and San Mateo on Saturday, Nov. 7, at 11 a.m., according to the school’s current schedule.
