Teachers across San Mateo County, including those in Burlingame and Hillsborough schools, can sign up for a new daylong arts education conference on Wednesday, Sept. 30.
The San Mateo County Office of Education is hosting the event at its Redwood City headquarters, 101 Twin Dolphin Drive, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The conference is open to transitional kindergarten through 12th-grade (TK-12) educators, administrators, teaching artists and school leaders. The San Mateo County Creates Arts Council is coordinating the program.
The theme is "The Art of Belonging: Building Safe and Connected Classrooms." Sessions focus on using creative projects to keep students engaged and build stronger classroom connections, SMCOE said on its website.
SMCOE describes the conference as a new opportunity for educators to integrate arts into their teaching across grade levels and subjects.
Keynote and workshops
Armando Castellano, a bilingual musician and arts advocate based in Silicon Valley, will deliver the keynote. Castellano leads Quinteto Latino, a professional wind quintet, and has worked as a teaching artist at Stanford Live and with Ravenswood School District.
Workshops span five art forms: dance, media arts, music, theatre and visual arts. Attendees will pick from hands-on sessions organized into four strands:
- Creativity and Well-Being
- Healing and Expression
- From Classroom to Community
- Adapting to a Changing World
Each registration includes three workshop sessions, two keynote presentations, breakfast and lunch.
