Burlingame High's varsity girls volleyball team won five of six matches at the San Mateo High Bearcat Classic on Saturday, Sept. 26, capping a week that included a key PAL Bay Division win over Carlmont.
The Panthers also beat Irvington 2-0 (25-11, 25-15), King City 2-0 (25-19, 25-11), Monta Vista 2-0 (25-20, 25-12), Abraham Lincoln 2-1 (25-20, 16-25, 15-13) and Capuchino 2-0 (25-8, 25-14) during the day-long tournament, according to a results graphic the athletics department posted Monday, Sept. 28, on X.
The tournament showing came two days after head coach Hannah Korslund's squad handed Carlmont its first PAL Bay Division loss of the season. Burlingame won that Thursday, Sept. 24, match in four sets, 25-22, 25-21, 23-25, 25-20, as reported by MaxPreps.
Junior setter Raya Tulchinsky ran the offense against Carlmont with 46 assists. Junior outside hitter Ilsa Carlson led the attack with 15 kills, 12 digs and five aces. Senior Jordan Toomey added 14 kills. Sophomore libero Aisla Haggarty anchored the back row with 20 digs.
The Carlmont win moved Burlingame to 4-1 in PAL Bay play and 5-4 overall, creating a three-way tie for first place with Carlmont and Aragon.
Korslund's program opened the fall with a 1-3 preseason record that included a scheduled match against Sacred Heart Preparatory on Sept. 3. "We play SHP every year. They're a great opponent. We schedule them on purpose because we know they'll challenge them, and we always hope we'll rise to the occasion," Korslund told The Burlingame B in a Sept. 7 article about that loss.
Their next PAL Bay Division opponent has not been announced.
