Senior Lucas Carlson scored seven goals to lead the Burlingame High boys water polo team past Aragon 14-11 on Monday, Sept. 28, in San Mateo.
The road win was Burlingame's first of the season and its first Peninsula Athletic League (PAL) Bay Division game. Carlson also recorded one assist and drew two exclusions, according to Burlingame High School Athletics on X. He scored half of Burlingame's 14 goals.
Burlingame jumped out to a 6-4 lead after the first quarter and extended it to 10-7 at halftime. Aragon trimmed the gap to 11-9 after three periods, outscoring the Panthers 2-1 in the third quarter. Burlingame answered with three fourth-quarter goals to seal the win. The Panthers finished with seven assists and five steals as a team.
Junior Nick Williams added two goals and a team-high two assists. Williams is tied with Carlson for the team lead in steals this season with six apiece. Junior goalkeeper Will Wuebbling stopped 10 shots in the victory.
The win moved Burlingame to 1-4 overall and 1-0 in league play. Aragon fell to 3-5.
It was a needed breakthrough. The Panthers' four losses came in tournament games before PAL play began. Burlingame fell 2-17 to Saint Francis on Aug. 28, then dropped two games on Aug. 29, losing 9-16 to St. Ignatius College Preparatory and 8-20 to Archbishop Mitty. A 10-21 loss to Aptos on Sept. 12 was Burlingame's final game before PAL play began.
Following the Aragon win, Carlson led Burlingame with 19 goals, six steals and 31 shots through five games. Williams had 11 goals and six assists, while Wuebbling had 19 saves, according to MaxPreps.
Burlingame returns home Monday, Oct. 5, at 4 p.m. against Woodside.
