San Mateo County supervisors were set to adopt a resolution Tuesday, Sept. 15, directing the county to find a site and funding for a regional firefighting training center that would serve Burlingame, Hillsborough and Millbrae, according to a summary of the meeting. The county's official minutes have not yet been finalized.

The board was also set to approve a $3.75 million expansion of its 911 dispatch agreement covering San Francisco International Airport, per that summary.

Supervisor Ray Mueller, vice president of the Board of Supervisors and the District 3 representative, introduced the training center resolution in connection with the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, The Almanac reported Friday, Sept. 11.

The resolution directs the County Executive to convene stakeholders and identify both a location and funding sources for a San Mateo County Regional Firefighting Training Center. No specific site, dollar figure or deadline appears in the resolution, according to the board's meeting record. The process is open-ended.

The Central County Fire Department serves Burlingame, Hillsborough and Millbrae, covering about 70,000 residents across 15.51 square miles surrounding SFO. Formed in 2004 from the merger of the Burlingame and Hillsborough fire departments, the department responds to about 7,000 calls per year and operates seven fire stations, a headquarters and a training facility. CCFD also participates in a Joint Powers Agreement with San Mateo County to provide Advanced Life Support services as part of a 20-city, 56-engine company workforce.

SFO dispatch agreement grows to $3.75 million

In a separate item on the agenda, the board was set to approve a second amendment to the county's 911 dispatch agreement with San Francisco's Airport Commission. The amendment extends the contract through Nov. 9, 2028, and raises the not-to-exceed amount by $1.25 million to a total of $3.75 million.

The agreement covers emergency dispatch services for incidents at SFO. Burlingame borders the airport, and Central County Fire's service area wraps around it.

The board's Sept. 15 agenda also included the first reading of an ordinance requiring permits for commercial use of autonomous AI-controlled robots and confirmation of Hannah Ormshaw as the county's parks director.

Individual vote tallies for the fire training center and dispatch items were not available in published meeting records as of Wednesday, Sept. 16. The county's Legistar system lists the Sept. 15 meeting's minutes as a draft, with action results marked unavailable for every item on the agenda. The SFO dispatch contract runs through Nov. 9, 2028, and the training center stakeholder process has no set deadline.
