Burlingame and Hillsborough residents can drop off up to nine old tires for free at the Millbrae Library parking lot on Saturday, Aug. 22.
San Mateo County's Sustainability Department is hosting the recycling event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 1 Library Ave. in Millbrae. The County of San Mateo announced the drop-off on its verified government X account on Tuesday, Aug. 11, giving residents about 10 days to gather old tires from garages and sheds.
The event accepts passenger and light truck tires sized R19.5 or smaller, with or without rims. All tires must be deflated before drop-off. The nine-tire-per-vehicle limit is set by California state law.
Only residential tires qualify. Tires from commercial businesses, auto repair shops or salvage yards will not be accepted.
Residents must bring proof they live in San Mateo County. A driver's license, utility bill or garbage collection bill all qualify.
The San Jose Conservation Corps, a nonprofit workforce development organization, will handle collection and recycling logistics at the site. The group partners with San Mateo and Santa Clara counties on waste-reduction programs across the region.
