Craig Pulley lost his home, nearly everything he owned and two cats when his Oakland trailer burned to the ground on Sunday, Aug. 9. Now friends are asking Burlingame-area neighbors to help him get back on his feet.
Pulley, a handyman known to his community for nearly 20 years, makes regular trips across the Bay to Burlingame, where his wife, Carol, lives in a nursing facility. The fundraiser's goal: replace his essentials and secure stable housing so he can keep showing up for her.
"In a matter of hours, he lost his home and nearly everything he owned," wrote Kat White, who organized a GoFundMe campaign launched Monday, Aug. 17.
White described Pulley as "our friend and handyman" who has been part of her community for close to two decades. The campaign, titled "Help Craig Rebuild After the Fire," asks donors to contribute toward replacing basic necessities and finding Pulley a place to live.
The cause of the fire has not been disclosed.
Pulley's connection to Burlingame runs through Carol. He drives regularly from Oakland to be present for her care, a routine his friends say they want to help him maintain despite losing his home base.
The Patch AM newsletter highlighted Pulley's story on Tuesday, Aug. 18, describing the effort as a community rallying around a caregiver who commutes to Burlingame.
