Burlingame sandwich shop Gigi's Cafe is expanding to a second location inside the city-owned Greyhound Bus Depot at 1080 Howard Ave., steps from the Caltrain station in downtown Burlingame.

Owner Teresa Gee signed a lease of up to 15 years for the roughly 590-square-foot building, according to WhatNow SF, citing the San Francisco Business Times. The lease includes an initial five-year term with two five-year extension options. The depot was built in 1939.

The new outpost, called Gigi's at the Depot, is set to welcome customers by the end of 2026, according to the San Mateo Daily Journal. The San Francisco Business Times first reported the expansion in July, noting a September target, but the Daily Journal's Aug. 10 report puts the opening "by the end of the year," suggesting the timeline has shifted.

Gee pursued the space after the city issued a request for proposals on Oct. 17, 2025, seeking a tenant for the depot. Proposals were due Dec. 18, 2025, with City Council lease approval estimated for February 2026.

The depot building had most recently served as office space and, before that, housed a sandwich shop. The city's RFP required the tenant to handle all capital improvements and maintenance while preserving the building's historic exterior.

Because the space is smaller than the original cafe, Gigi's at the Depot will offer a more limited menu focused on made-to-order sandwiches and grab-and-go items. Signature options from the Anza Boulevard location, including the Tech Bro (pastrami, turkey and bacon), the BAE (bacon, avocado and egg salad) and the Fishin' 4 Heat tuna melt, are expected to carry over. Outdoor seating will be available nearby.

The original Gigi's Cafe has operated for nearly nine years at 111 Anza Blvd. and will remain open. Gee has earned multiple awards for her sandwiches, including a No. 14 ranking on Yelp's Top 100 Places to Eat in the United States in 2023. The cafe is open Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Saturday, 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

There are no assigned parking spaces at the depot, but roughly 17 metered street spaces sit adjacent to the building and a city-owned parking garage is one block away.
