Burlingame residents can meet neighbors and Councilmember Donna Colson at the city's Town Square on Tuesday, Aug. 4, from 5 to 7 p.m. as part of National Night Out.

The gathering, promoted by the Burlingame Chamber of Commerce on July 30, is one of more than a dozen San Mateo County events tied to the national campaign. Millbrae, Belmont, San Mateo and Foster City are also holding gatherings Tuesday evening, according to the Mercury News.

National Night Out is an annual community-building campaign held the first Tuesday in August since 1984. The National Association of Town Watch created it to strengthen ties between neighbors and local law enforcement. The first event drew 2.5 million participants across 400 communities in 23 states.

The event marks another milestone for the $6.4 million Town Square, which opened April 2 with a ribbon-cutting attended by Colson and Mayor Michael Brownrigg. Located between Park Road and Lorton Avenue in downtown Burlingame, the plaza has hosted a packed schedule of programming since its spring debut, including live music, Pasifika Fest and family fitness events.

"For me, it is a little emotional, because, as many of my colleagues know, this has been a passion of mine for about 16 years," Brownrigg said at the April 2 opening ceremony. "When I ran for council in 2009, it was in my campaign document, 'let's build a town square.' Sixteen years later, I finally delivered."

Admission is free.

Burlingame's National Night Out is open to all residents at 265 Lorton Ave. in downtown Burlingame, with no registration required.
