The first interior photos of The Old Post Office restaurant at 220 Park Road show a nearly finished dining room inside the historic 1941 post office building in downtown Burlingame.
Burlingame Voice published the photos Saturday, Sept. 12, taken by a reader who got a look inside the space. The images show the renovated interior that Bacchus Management Group is converting into a full-service, white-tablecloth restaurant.
Bacchus, the San Francisco-based hospitality company behind Michelin-starred The Village Pub in Woodside and Spruce in San Francisco, signed a 10-year lease on roughly 8,000 square feet of the restored ground floor plus an outdoor dining terrace. Tim Stannard, the group's founding partner and president, described the concept as "gorgeous" and "dramatic" when the project was first announced in a San Francisco Business Times report in November 2023.
"I walked in and I got chills," Stannard told the Business Times at the time. He described soaring ceilings, terrazzo floors poured nearly a century ago and slabs of marble harvested from the Sierra Nevada.
The company also conducted listening tours around Hillsborough and Burlingame to learn what local residents wanted from the restaurant, according to a Comaroto Properties report on the project.
Built in 1941 as part of a New Deal program in a Spanish and Art Deco hybrid style, the post office anchored downtown Burlingame for more than 75 years before closing in 2015. During construction of a two-level underground garage for the 220 Park development, the entire building was cut from its foundation, moved roughly 120 feet away, and later returned to its original spot. The SF Standard reported the building was designated a historic resource in 2020. Preservation advocates, including UC Berkeley scholar Gray Brechin, argued for saving the structure as early as 2014.
The six-story, 185,000-square-foot 220 Park office complex now rises above the restored post office, adjacent to the Burlingame Town Square that opened April 2.
Bacchus listed The Old Post Office as "coming fall 2026" on its website and held open-house hiring events in early September. Lauren Kemp is listed as director of operations for the restaurant on the company's team page. The SF Chronicle named The Old Post Office among the Bay Area's most anticipated restaurant openings this year.
