Burlingame and Hillsborough teachers can now book a free 30-minute visit from a San Mateo County judge or attorney for their K-12 classrooms this fall, as the Superior Court commits to reaching at least 250 students by the end of 2026.
The court announced Aug. 10 it has accepted Chief Justice Patricia Guerrero's Power of Democracy Civic Learning Initiative Challenge, known as POD250. The program ties into California's commemoration of America's 250th anniversary and focuses on Constitution Month in September, when judges and local attorneys will be available for interactive classroom presentations.
Students get age-appropriate discussions about constitutional rights, mock trials and how the judicial branch works.
"Constitution Month is one of my favorite community outreach events," Judge Renee Reyna, chair of the San Mateo County Court Community Outreach Committee, said in the court's announcement. "I often find myself learning more from them through their curious questions and wise observations."
With Burlingame schools opening Wednesday, Aug. 19 for the 2026-27 year, teachers have a narrow window to schedule September sessions. The court is encouraging educators to book early.
Beyond classroom presentations, judges or attorneys can also administer oaths for student government and club leaders at the start of the school year. Oaths can be given in English or Spanish, subject to availability.
The program is part of a statewide push. Each September, California judges present Civic Learning Awards and visit schools as part of the judicial branch's Constitution Month activities, according to the state courts newsroom.
Reyna said in the announcement that the court's goal goes beyond the 250-student target, aiming to build lasting relationships with schools and make the justice system more accessible to young people.
