San Mateo County Sheriff's deputies arrested a 28-year-old East Palo Alto man they say stole 10 bicycles from Caltrain stations between May and August.
The San Mateo County Sheriff's Office said on X that deputies obtained an arrest warrant and took the suspect into custody Monday, Aug. 31, ending a three-month investigation into the thefts. The agency issued a press release Wednesday, Sept. 2, announcing the arrest.
Deputies identified the suspect using video footage provided by Caltrain from inside the train, the Sheriff's Office said. They found him at a hotel in Hayward and took him into custody without incident.
The suspect was booked into the Maguire Correctional Facility on multiple counts of grand theft of personal property and petty theft. He had been arrested in September 2025 in connection with a separate bicycle theft, according to the Sheriff's Office.
The Sheriff's Office received 10 reports of stolen bicycles from Caltrain stations during the three-month stretch. The agency did not specify which stations were targeted. The Sheriff's Office is contracted to provide policing services along the Caltrain corridor, which runs from San Francisco to Gilroy.
The thefts hit close to home for Burlingame commuters who bike to the train. Burlingame's Broadway station operates on weekends only. On weekdays, riders connect through Millbrae Station, one stop south, which is the region's largest intermodal transit hub. Millbrae offers Caltrain, BART and SamTrans bus connections along with nearly 2,900 parking spaces and bike racks. Downtown Burlingame sits roughly a 10- to 12-minute bike ride from Millbrae, making a stolen bicycle more than an inconvenience for commuters who depend on two wheels to reach the platform.
Caltrain supports about 1.8 million bicycle trips each year, according to the transit agency.
No arraignment date has been announced.
