The San Mateo Union High School District updated trustees Oct. 22 on its work developing guidance for classroom AI use at Burlingame High and the district’s other schools.

The presentation covered progress since a May study session, the establishment of a 2026-27 AI Steering Committee and further work on district guidance, according to the district’s AI education page.

Earlier recommendations included a red, yellow and green framework for AI use, a list of approved platforms and educational resources for students, teachers and families. The district listed those measures as priorities rather than confirming their implementation in the October summary.

A May 21 board memo said the advisory group met from February through May to develop recommendations for using AI while preserving student learning, critical thinking and relationships.

The memo also described an AI Fellowship for educators. Two students from the advisory group shared their perspectives during its final session.

The next regular board meeting is scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 19, at 7 p.m., according to the Oct. 22 meeting summary.
