Burlingame High's football team carries a perfect 5-0 record into Friday's game at Palo Alto on Oct. 9 at 7 p.m.
The Panthers have outscored opponents 215-29 through five games, including a 59-6 rout of Hillsdale on Sept. 17 and a 49-0 shutout of Arroyo on Sept. 12. Their most recent win, 21-10 over Menlo School on Sept. 26, was their tightest contest of the season, according to MaxPreps.
Senior defensive back Dylan Black has been the breakout performer. Black leads the Central Coast Section with six interceptions. In the Hillsdale game, he returned three picks for touchdowns of 40, 25 and 60 yards. CalHiSports named the 6-foot-1, 170-pound senior its Northern California Defensive Player of the Week, noting no CCS player had returned three interceptions for scores in a single game since 1978.
After the Panthers' 41-13 home-opener win over Carlmont on Sept. 4, Black told The Burlingame B: "I'm just looking forward to staying undefeated. You know, we can't be losing, so just keeping that zero on our record."
Head coach John Philipopoulos praised his team's performance after that same Carlmont game, saying the Panthers' ability to control all four quarters spoke to the group's potential.
On offense, senior wide receiver Will Armstrong averages 63.4 receiving yards per game and has scored seven touchdowns. Senior kicker Danny O'Shea leads the CCS with 35 kicking points. Junior running back Luke Doss adds 36.4 rushing yards per game.
The defense has been just as stingy. Senior linebacker Reid O'Brien averages 4.8 tackles per game, and senior Bryce Cone has recorded two sacks on the season.
Palo Alto enters the matchup at 4-1 and ranked No. 22 in the CCS, according to MaxPreps. The Vikings' last outing was a high-scoring 45-42 win over King's Academy on Sept. 24.
The Panthers sit at No. 14 in the CCS and No. 19 in the San Francisco Metro area.
The Panthers' remaining schedule after the Palo Alto game: Oct. 16 vs. Half Moon Bay (home, 6:55 p.m.), Oct. 23 at Woodside (7 p.m.), Oct. 30 vs. Mountain View (home, 6:55 p.m.) and Nov. 6 vs. San Mateo (home, 10:55 a.m.).
