Burlingame drivers heading north on US-101 will need a detour this weekend after Caltrans shuts down all northbound lanes in San Francisco for paving.

The closure runs from 11 p.m. Friday, Sept. 18, through 6 a.m. Monday, Sept. 21, covering the Hospital Curve stretch between Cesar Chavez Street and the area near 17th Street, according to a Caltrans advisory. Crews will work around the clock as part of the Hospital Curve Rehabilitation Project, which began in fall 2025. All southbound lanes stay open.

Caltrans is directing drivers to use I-280 northbound to reach downtown San Francisco or the Bay Bridge. The agency has also published detour maps for travelers heading to and from San Francisco International Airport.

The closure overlaps with a major game day. The San Francisco 49ers host the Miami Dolphins at 1:25 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 20, at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara.

Burlingame residents can skip the highway altogether. Caltrain's weekend service runs every 30 minutes throughout the day, and the Burlingame station puts riders on a direct line to Mountain View Station. There, fans transfer to Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) light rail, which runs to the stadium.

A joint Caltrain + VTA Day Pass is available at origin station ticket machines. Caltrain advises buying the pass before boarding, not at Mountain View. The pass covers Caltrain through end of service and VTA buses and light rail until 3 a.m.

Station parking costs $5.50 per day through the ParkMobile app or ticket vending machines. Mountain View parking is limited, so Caltrain recommends arriving early or parking at another station along the line.

This is the second of two planned full-weekend closures at Hospital Curve. The first took place over Labor Day weekend, Sept. 4–7.

One note for South Bay riders: Caltrain is suspending weekend service between Tamien and San Jose Diridon stations on Saturday, Sept. 19, and Sunday, Sept. 20, for the final round of Guadalupe River Bridge repairs. Riders not traveling to Tamien should not be affected.
