A 28-year-old woman died early Sunday, Sept. 20, after her vehicle struck a boulder in the center median of southbound Interstate 280 near Hillsborough, the California Highway Patrol said.

The crash happened at about 2 a.m. just south of the Black Mountain Road/Hayne Road exit in unincorporated Hillsborough, according to CHP Officer Sophie Lu, as reported by SFGate.

The San Mateo County Coroner's Office identified the victim as Maya Raphaella Shustik, 28, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Officers responded to the area around 2 a.m. but could not locate the crash scene in the darkness, Lu said, according to SFGate. More calls came in later that morning, and the vehicle, a black Volkswagen Tiguan, was found in a ditch in the center median at about 7:30 a.m.

Nearly five and a half hours passed between the initial report and the discovery of the wreck. Lu said Shustik was the sole occupant of the vehicle.

Lu told the Chronicle the crash appeared to be a solo collision with a "big boulder." The CHP was still investigating the cause Sunday afternoon, and no details about speed, impairment or road conditions had been released as of that time.

The crash occurred in an unincorporated area of San Mateo County near Hillsborough, placing it under CHP jurisdiction rather than local police departments. The Black Mountain Road/Hayne Road exit sits along a stretch of I-280 that runs between Crystal Springs Reservoir and the Hillsborough town limits.

The investigation remained open as of Sunday afternoon. The CHP has not announced a timeline for releasing additional findings.
